Vote: best classic hard rock vocalist

I recently read somewhere that Ronnie James Dio (RIP 2010) was the best hard rock singer of all time- I definitely don’t disagree, but I also think that Ian Gillan was, Steve Marriott was also, Robert Plant was too…so I thought about having a vote for fun to resurface the love of classic hard rock and put out some appreciation.
I was advised to throw in Rob Halford of Judas Priest as well as David Lee Roth. If you have any other favorites, please tell us!

  3. “Thats a tough debate. Marriot’s super versatile. Gillan was very interesting and Plant soulful and piercing, but where’s Freddie Mercury and Paul Rodgers? Might go with Dio.”

  4. J. Wintle says:

I have to go with Dio because of his range (notes, but more importantly dynamics) as well as his ability to express the text of whatever song he was singing. I never heard him sing a single word without imbuing that word with its fullest possible meaning. That’s what makes a great singer in my book regardless of style. – JW

  5. Michelle Armstrong says:

Close tie between Robert Plant and Freddie Mercury! I’d throw Chris Cornell on that list.

  6. Jamie says:

What no Jen/Hodge option? 😉 Steven Tyler would be a good option too…
